Lot Essay

The female figure is based on prints after Marcellus Laroon in the ‘Cryes of the city of London’, published in 1711. The fashionably dressed ‘courtesan’ is a prostitute who in the character of ‘Mrs Russell’ haunted the streets along with her companion, the Squire of Alsatia. See Y. Adams, Meissen Figures, 1730-1775 The Kaendler Period, Atglen, 2001, p. 45, no. 100 for a reproduction of the Laroon engraving.
