POSTEL, Guillaume (1510-1581). De rationibus spiritus sancti lib. II. Paris: Pierre Gromors, 1543. 8° (146 x 95mm). Woodcut printer's device on title and woodcut initials. (Without blank g6, occasional light spotting.) 20th-century binding, reusing earlier vellum (very faint soiling to covers).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Postel's work sought to demonstrate that there was nothing within religion which did not conform to nature and reason. It is a wide-ranging book, that enquires as to the nature of divinity between different religions, comparing Christians, Jews and Muslims. Postel was evidently widely-read, at one point in his argument making cross-reference to a specific chapter in the Koran (p.45). Adams P-2023; Brunet IV, 840.
