CLARKE, William. Repertorium Bibliographicum; or, Some Account of the Most Celebrated British Libraries. London: William Clarke, 1819. Two volumes, 4° (275 x 189mm). With half-titles. Ten engraved plates including the frontispiece, some of these on india paper and mounted. (Some spotting in the plates as often.) Contemporary russia, sides with gilt rule border and with a dotted rule in blind, edges gilt (rebacked to style, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (statesman, 1799-1869; bookplate; shelf-mark of the Garden Library at Knowsley; title inscription recording the purchase from Boone, 3 May 1844 for 1.10).
FIRST EDITION. PRIME MINISTER STANLEY’S COPY. A tall copy of this first-hand account of the great public and private libraries in the British Isles. With, bound-in at the end, a scarce satire of bibliomania sometimes attributed to William Beckford, A Dialogue in the Shades, and A Ballad entitled Rare Doings at Roxburghe Hall (c. 1819). Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp.39-41 (‘a good book’ with a useful index of books; ‘accounts of collectors and collections do not usually offer the reader the assistance of such an index’).
