Mounted with brass rosettes and palmettes, the later ebonised and parcel giltwood cornice above a single door faced as two doors, enclosing six adjustable shelves, on a parcel gilt and grained base, the sides in stained pine, the whole adapted from a larger bookcase

Lot Essay

The bookcase is visible in the background of the portrait of Phillipps’s grandson Thomas Fitzroy Fenwick by E.I. Halliday, reproduced in Phillipps Studies. It was acquired by Anthony Hobson from Philip and Lionel Robinson, probably as a gift, during their collaboration to disperse the residue of the Phillipps collection through a series of sales at Sotheby’s, as well as through the Robinsons’ own bookseller catalogues.
