The composition is carved in the round to render a lotus group comprising blooms, large undulating leaves and lotus pod, stemming from the root. The stone is of an even tone with a slight celadon tint and with some opaque inclusions.

Lot Essay

While lotus group were a popular themes found on jade carvings of this period, it is rare to find one of this substantial size. A white jade carving of lotus and bird group with similar composition but smaller (22.5 cm. wide) is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji, vol. 6, no. 332. (fig. 1)
