GRANDE BOITE COUVERTE EN ECAILLE DE TORTUE SCULPTEE
CHINE, DYNASTIE QING, XVIIIEME-XIXEME SIECLE
The box is of rounded octagonal form, and is supported by four bracket feet decorated with acanthus leaves. The cover is intricately carved and pierced with a central scene depicting an archery contest, with onlookers seated in a nearby pavilion, surrounded by further smaller scenes of gatherings and figures in houses. The box is similarly carved with figures within pavilions, in gardens, and crossing bridges surrounded by trees. The shell is of a dark walnut tone with lighter honey tone areas to the base.
