Inscribed: “Sophie Petrovna [Russian characters] from Maurice Baring", with Countess Benckendorff’s “S.B.” label. Marbled paper box. With two printed books by the same author, namely Translations Ancient & Modern (with originals) (London, 1925, original wrappers, NUMBER 4 OF 175 COPIES) and Algae: An Anthology of Phrases (London, 1928, original wrappers, ONE OF 100 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR). Baring’s selected quotations in the commonplace book are taken from classical writers of English, French, Italian, German, ancient Greek (Sappho), Latin and Russian, in original languages. Several of them appear also in Algae. Countess Sophie Benckendorff was a long-standing friend who, as “S.B.”, illustrated at least two of Baring’s books.
