Half title, errata slip stating “… This book was written in English by the author” loosely-inserted (lightly browned throughout). Original red paper boards. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY to Anthony Hobson, with the printed words “Translated by …” scored through by the author and replaced by him with “inspired by”, and signed beneath with the author’s initials. A typed letter, signed, from Anthony Rota to Anthony Hobson, dated 16th May, 1966, discusses the error regarding the book's purported translation, and establishes precedence of the Left Book Club edition over the Jonathan Cape edition accordingly. With 4 other books by the same author, namely Scum of the Earth (London, Jonathan Cape, [1941], with no mention of translator, INSCRIBED “A.K. to Anthony”), Arrow in the Blue. An Autobiography (London, 1952, INSCRIBED “To Anthony from Arthur – minus date (appr. 1955). Be kind to the foreigner – the poor chap can’t help it. Op. cit.”), The Invisible Writing. Being the second volume of Arrow in the Blue ([London], 1954, INSCRIBED “To Anthony from Arthur. 13.1.55”) and Dialogue with Death ([London, 1954], INSCRIBED “Last book written (partly only) in German. To Anthony from Arthur”), all in original cloth with dust-jackets.
