(one fold of table torn without loss, small smudge on titlepage, spine and cover extremities rubbed). Half blue morocco slipcase. Provenance: Edward Shippen 1729-1806, prominent lawyer and mayor of Philadelphia (ink inscription on title) – Edward Shippen Burd (ink inscription on Advertisments page) – Burd School Library (bookplate).

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Jefferson’s classic account of his natal state, written at the request of Marquis de Barbé Marbois, Secretary of the French Legation in Philadelphia, describing Virginia’s topography, natural history, botany, mineral and agricultural productions, manufactures, ethnography, religion, commerce and government. With the important appendices: Charles Thomson’s information regarding Indian tribes, Virginia’s Constitution and an Act for the Establishment of Religious Freedom.
