Lot Essay

The chair's profusely carved asymmetrical frame recalls the rich character of furniture supplied to the Spanish royal palaces after the accession of Carlos III, formerly Carlos VII of Naples, who brought with him an appreciation of decorative styles from the French and Italian royal courts. A console table similarly rendered, particularly in the design of the stretchers, from the Palace of Perelada, Gerona, is illustrated in L. Feduchi, Spanish Furniture, New York, 1969, p.176, fig.152. A pair of throne chairs of slightly less exuberant form in the Royal Chapel at the Palace of Madrid is illustrated in J. Hernández Ferrero, The Royal Palaces of Spain, 1997, p. 147.
