Lot Essay

The present pair of pastels probably dates from the late 1770s, and the sitters are John Paul Smyth (1735–1797), perfumer of Bond Street, and his wife, née Mary Higford (1737–1800). Their daughter Anne (c.1774–1808), married Sir Frederick Morton Eden, 2nd Bt (1764–1809).
