Lot Essay

This work could possibly relate to Pils' commission to paint part of the ceiling of the grand staircase of the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris. Amongst the painted scenes was 'Apollo in His Chariot'. Although no firm relation between both works has been confirmed, the present work could have been one of the artist's studies in preparation for this commission.
