Opaque dark blue enamel surfaces with engraved gold foliate scrollwork, cover with rose-diamond set initial N within laurel wreath with crown above for Napoleon III, base with foliate scrollwork around a vacant reserve, sides with six foliate straps, engraved to front rim with retailer's details G.Lemonnier, Joaillier de la Couronne, 25 Place Vendôme, interior of cover inscribed in English:- Presented by their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of the French, to Mr. Nathan Thompson Jr. of New York, U.S.A. as a testimony of his Genius for inventing an invaluable Self Adjusting Life Preserving Seat which is destined to render important services to humanity, 7th April, 1855, Palace of the Tuileries

A New York State patent no.10141 was granted on 18/10/1853 and the seat was probably exhibited in the Paris Exposition Universelle on the Champs Elysées held from May 15 to November 15, 1855
