Lot Essay

The present work is a study for lot 129, Daphnis and Chloe. This watercolour was exhibited in Sheffield, Graves Art Gallery's 1986 exhibition, and it is discussed in the catalogue: 'Despite its date, this may be one of the earliest of Brockhurst's Irish compositions. It is not known for what if anything it may be a study, but the title would in the circumstances, appear to be somewhat anodyne' (A. Goodchild, exhibition catalogue, A Dream of Fair Women: An Exhibition of the Work of Gerald Leslie Brockhurst, R.A. (1890-1978): Painter and Etcher, Sheffield, Graves Art Gallery, 1986, p. 39).
