A CORINTHIAN BLACK-FIGURED COLUMN KRATER
MIDDLE CORINTHIAN, CIRCA 580 B.C.
Decorated in two registers, the upper on one side with battle scene, with two groups of three hoplites carrying circular shields and spears, wearing crested helmets and some with decorated tunics, rosettes in the field, the other side with four horsemen riding to the right, each carrying a spear, bird and rosettes in the field, the forepart only of the last rider visible emerging from the handle, a griffin and a swan under each handle; the lower register with animal frieze with four pairs goats and panthers facing one another with a swan terminal; rays above the foot, a siren on each handle-plate, rows of stepped zigzag on the upper surface of the rim; details in added red
