Lot Essay

Lucas van Uden's admiration of Peter Paul Rubens' and his landscapes is particularly visible in this painting. The artist was strongly influenced by the elder master and often copied, or re-worked, Rubens' compositions. Elsewhere he introduced Rubensian elements such as, in the present painting, a woman carrying a round jug.
