Details
SHEPARD, E. H. (1879-1976) and A. A. MILNE (1882-1956)
Vespers
282 x 190mm, drawing in pencil, pen and black and brown ink, initialled by Shepard (‘EHS’, lower right) and fair-copy autograph poem signed by Milne (‘A.A. Milne’), 6 verses, 24 lines, mounted, framed and glazed. Provenance: Chris Beetles, London.
The presence of the hands of both E.H. Shepard and A.A. Milne on a single drawing board for Vespers – a poem first published in When we were very young (1924), at the very beginning of their collaboration – offers a charming visual embodiment of the working relationship that would gain world-renown through the Pooh series. The teddy bear shown cast aside atop the coverlet whilst Christopher Robin slumbers may well be the first representation of Winnie the Pooh, the bear belonging to Milne’s son.
