ARISTOTLE (384-322 B.C.). De natura animalium. –De partibus animalium, and other texts. Translated by Theodorus Gaza (c.1400-1475). Venice: Aldus Manutius, February 1513.
2° (310 x 211mm). Text in Latin and Greek. Aldine device on title, on part title of Problematum and on N6v. (Title recornered, some light soiling, heavier on outer margin of y4, light waterstaining, heavier on upper margin of a few leaves, light spotting, eight leaves browned.) Contemporary blindstamped calf, spine with blindstamp arabesque (rebacked and restored preserving old spine, some rubbing). Provenance: erased stamp on title — Livio Ambrogio (bookplate).
RARE second Aldine edition and one the few scientific works printed by Aldus. The work was first printed in Venice in 1476 and published by Aldus for the first time in 1504 (see lot 71); due to its popularity it was reprinted a decade later in this edition. The classification of animals, made from empiric observations, remained the principal reference-point until the breakthroughs of modern science more than 2,000 years later.
