Super-chancery 2° (303 x 210mm). Collation: a-z8 & ?8 R6 (a1r dedicatory address to Victorius Marcellus, table, text, R6r colophon, R6v blank). 206 leaves. 41 lines. Type: 5:111Rb1. Spaces for Greek, some filled in in Latin in a contemporary hand, 2- to 5-line initial spaces with guide-letter filled in red, capitals and headings highlighted in yellow. (A few minor wormholes at beginning and end, upper margin of first leaf repaired.) 18th-century French red morocco, sides with gilt fillet border, gilt spine, gilt edges (repaired at hinges and spine ends). The Crevenna-Wodhull-Goldschmidt copy of the fourth edition of Quintilian's comprehensive treatise on classical rhetorical theory. Aiming to restore the art of rhetoric to the high standards of Cicero, Quintilian outlines the training of an orator, which he insisted instilled good character and was necessary to responsible citizenship.
