ST DOROTHEUS OF RADONEZH (510-565). Prepodobnago otsa nashego avvy Dorofea Poucheniia. [The Teachings of our Reverend Father Dorotheus.] Kiev: Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, 1628.
4° (201 x 162mm). Pagination: complete with [8], 450, [2] pages. Woodcut title border, woodcut arms of Petr Mogilov on the title verso, full-page woodcut portrait illustration of St Dorotheus, the portrait and border hand-coloured. (Leaf A1 with losses affecting some lines, small loss in the bottom margin of the title, some short tears and small marginal losses, some repaired, occasional dampstaining.) Contemporary calf over wooden boards, sides tooled in blind, metal catches (spine and edges entirely covered in later roan, lacking clasps, front board split, endpapers renewed). Provenance: continuous ownership inscription in an early hand in the bottom margin of the first few leaves.
FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE UKRAINIAN PUBLICATION: WorldCat locates just one copy, at the State Library in Berlin. ABPC and RBH record no copy sold at auction. The Teachings of Dorotheus is the very first book listed in Sopikov’s exhaustive bibliography of Russian books; Sopikov records no fewer than five pre 19th-century editions of this popular work. This copy is bound with Liubomudrieishogo kir Agapita Diakona (Kiev: 1628; lacking two or more leaves at the end) a rare Slavonic translation of a Byzantine mirror for princes – WorldCat locates just one copy, at the University of Alberta. Karataev 326, Sopikov 1; Undol’skii 311.
