LE HAY, Jacques (c.1645-c.1713) – [Charles de FERRIOL (1637-1722).] Recueil de Cent Estampes representant differentes Nations du Levant, tirées sur les Tableaux peints d’après Nature en 1707. et 1708. Large 2° (505 x 330mm). Engraved calligraphic title-page heightened with gold, 100 engraved plates including the double-page wedding procession, and extra-illustrated with two additional double-page plates, all finely coloured in a contemporary hand and c.30 plates heightened with mica. (Some short marginal tears, one of these in plate 69 reaching into the engraving, occasional light marginal soiling and dampstaining.) Contemporary mottled calf (worn, covers detached, corner rubbed down, sides scuffed, front free endpaper torn and worn). Provenance: F. Germain, of Lyon (engraved bookplate) – Catherine Edwards (signature) – Sir Francis Clare Ford (1828-1899, diplomatist; his bookplate with an inscription dated Rome, November 1894, presenting the book to:) – Richard Ford (1860-1940, officer).
FIRST EDITION, AMBASSADOR FORD’S COPY, RICHLY HAND-COLOURED THROUGHOUT, about thirty plates with the jewellery and other reflective surfaces heightened with mica. ‘This splendid production... contains what may be the only wholly original representations of Turkish costumes since Nicolay; in any case, these images were at once enormously influential’ (Koç). These became the most popular illustrations of Turkish costume, and remained the standard for future depictions. Francis Clare Ford in his long and distinguished diplomatic career served at Constantinople in 1892 and Rome from 1893; earlier he had served in Washington, Buenos Aires, St Petersburg, Vienna and Athens. This copy extra-illustrated with the two double-page plates issued the following year with the separately-published text volume: the dancing dervishes at Pera, and the funeral procession.
