Lot Essay
We are grateful to Leonard Roberts for suggesting that the present lot is almost certainly the same painting as The Visit, cited in his catalogue raisonné of the artist as no. 441, and exhibited at the Dunthorne exhibition, 1904, no. 42. The label on the reverse of A visit to Grandmother is very similar to others attached to works shown at the Dunthorne exhibition, many titles of which were changed in time for his memorial exhibition in 1916. While the titles of the two and the evidence of the label both suggest that they're the same, as there is no known photograph nor contemporary description of The Visit to allow a comparison of the two.
The garden is the same as that depicted in Friends, also included in the Dunthorne exhibition, catalogue raisonné no. 444 and sold in these rooms 5 November 1997, lot 195.
Students of garden history will be interested by the planting depicted, the 'hoggin' path of beaten earth, and the rustic pergola, all elements of the Gertrude Jekyll inspired 'Arts and Crafts' garden.
