Lot Essay

Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, has confirmed the attribution to Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen I on the basis of photographs and dates this picture to the 1660s (written communication to the owner, 22 December 2014). Mr Meijer notes that Verbruggen may also have painted the central Christ crowned with thorns which appears to have been copied after the medallion in a cartouche still life from circa 1643 by Daniel Seghers, a picture that was at the time on display at the Antwerp Church of St. Ignatius.
