Lot Essay

Busiri Vici, who dates these landscapes to circa 1720 (op. cit.), compares them with the picture in the Tersigni collection, Rome, and its now separated companion piece in the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome; works which he describes as constituting 'one of the finest Locatelli pairs of canvases' (ibid. no. 19 & 20).
