Lot Essay

Diane Deriaz, a French trapeze artist, met Penrose in 1953. They entered into a long affair which became more public following the death of his wife Lee Miller in 1977. She joined him in his travels to France, Sri-Lanka, Kenya and the Seychelles in the 1980s, which were the main sources of inspiration for Penrose's postcard collages.
