Lot Essay

The current lot is a study for the painting in the National Museum of Wales. It is one of several studies made by Romney for the painting with other versions being held in the Ashmolean Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Gallery of Scotland, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Yale University. However, the work offered here appears to be more resolved than many of the other studies and includes final details such as the eagle and the urn which are omitted in others.
We are grateful to Alex Kidson for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph.
