Lot Essay

According to John W. Coffey, Curator of American and Modern Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art, the present work "is a European scene, most probably based on sketches made in Germany. At the time Mignot was based at The Hague and very much under the influence of contemporary Dutch landscape painters, especially his teacher Andreas Schelfhout. It relates in a general way to several other landscapes from this early period in Mignot's career." (unpublished letter, 2014)
