Lot Essay

Leander, the mythological youth, fell in love with Hero, a priestess of Aphrodite. Every night he would swim across the Hellespont see her. However, on one treacherous crossing Leander became lost, and drowned. In this current lot Hero weeps by the side of her beloved Leander, whilst it has been suggested that the figure in the background is Charon, the ferryman of the Styx, approaching in his skiff.
