Lot Essay

Fifth son of the 1st Duke and Duchess of Leinster. After service in the British army during the American War of Independence he entered politics, took up the cause of Irish freedom and joined the United Irishmen. Following his involvement in the unsuccessful 1798 Uprising, he was arrested and died in Newgate Gaol, Dublin. Lord Edward became a fashionable hero and there was much popular demand for images of him.
