A HONGMU ROPE-TWIST-FORM CIRCULAR STAND
18TH-19TH CENTURY
The platform has a central circular aperture with raised outer rim, and the whole is raised on five legs carved to simulate twisted rope which continues to form the shaped aprons and which are joined by rounded, conjoined stretchers.
4 5/8 in. (11.8 cm.) high, 12 ¼ in. (31.3 cm.) diam.

Compare a square blackwood stand with burl-inset top, dated to the late 18th century, illustrated by P. Mak, The Art of Chinese Wooden Stands: The Songde Tang Collection, Hong Kong, 2008 pp. 200-1, pl. 64, which is also raised on legs and aprons carved to simulate twisted rope, and is attributed to the Southern style, commonly associated with Guangdong.
