Ambassador Everett F. Drumright (1907-1993) was an American diplomat who served most of his career in Asia. Fluent in Chinese, Ambassador Drumright lived in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Chongqing during the turbulent decades of the mid-20th century. In 1945 he was named chief of the State Department's Division of Chinese Affairs. He was the U.S. Ambassador to Taiwan between 1958-1962, a critical time in the area. After his retirement from the government, Ambassador Drumright taught at several universities.
Florence Teets Drumright (1915-2003) was a travel and aviation journalist, who wrote for The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor. One of her three books was Taiwan, Eden in Asia, which she published in 1969. Also able to speak and read Chinese and an avid art enthusiast, Mrs. Drumright befriended many artists during her years abroad, and she continued to visit them when traveling in subsequent years. Her collection was gifted to the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum in 1996 and to members of her family.
