Al-Qalasadi al-Basti was born in Granada although his family originally came from Basta, in Spain. He was a mathematician and worked in Granada, Tlemcen and Tunis where he died.

There are two works by al-Qalasadi in this volume: Sharh kitab al-dhururi fi ‘ilm hisab and qasm al-mawarith (A Commentary on the Book of the Essentials of the Science of Arithmetic and the Division of Inheritance). It is not recorded in Brockelmann and Rosenfeld and could in fact be a commentary by somebody else on one of Qalasadi's works. It is dated Saturday 26 Ramadan AH 1126/1714-15 AD. The second work by the author is Bughyat al-muhtadi wa ghunyat al-muntahi (The Aim of those that go by the Right Path and Sufficient to the Limit), a treatise on inheritance. It is recorded in Brockelmann, S., II, 378-379 and Rosenfeld, no. 865, M6. It is dated Friday 19 Ramadan AH 1132/1719-20 AD.

There are also three short unidentified treatises and a treatise by Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Musa Hamdun al-Abbar (1593-1660). He was a mathematician, a khatib in the al-Andalus Mosque in Fez. The work is Kashf al-riwaq ‘an sarf al-jami’a ila’l-awaq (The Removal of the Cover from General Payments and Disasters, a treatise on insurance). It is recorded in Rosenfeld, no.1146 and Brockelmann, S., II., 707 and dated 29 Ramadan AH 1[1]33/1720-21 AD.

The colophon indicates that it the manuscript was copied in Umm al-Qazawat (or Qarawat?) on the coast of Al-Andalus ('ala sahil al-andalus).
