Arabic manuscript on Italian paper watermarked 'Andrea Galvani Pordenone', 210ff. plus two fly-leaves, each folio with 17ll. of black naskh script, with red roundel verse markers, sura headings in red thuluth script within cartouches, text within double red rules, with catchwords, red marginal markers, opening bifolio with polychrome headpieces, colophon added, later ownership note dated AH 1286, in stamped and tooled red morocco binding with flap

Lot Essay

The Andrea Galvani paper on which this Qur'an is copied is Italian, from Pordenone near Venice. This paper became very commonly used for manuscripts copied in Egypt, the Sudan and Saharan Africa after appearing in Cairo in 1868.
