A PAINTING OF THE DIRECTIONAL GUARDIANS, DHRITARASHTRA AND VIRUDHAKA
TIBET OR CHINA, LATE 19TH/ EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Standing on the left, Dhritarashtra, guardian of the East, green in color, with an open red mouth and bared fangs, his two hands holding a lute, adorned with an elaborate crown and large gold earrings and wearing a long multicolored garment, surrounded by a dark blue nimbus, and at right, Virudhaka, guardian of the South, dark blue in color, his lower teeth biting down on the upper lip, holding the hilt of a long sword in his hands, adorned with a gold crown surmounted by a red streamer, and wearing a long multicolored garment, and a dark green nimbus, both standing atop a rocky outcropping and surrounded by clouds, with three red buddhas seated on lotus blossoms in the sky above
