The Property of a Spanish CollectorUn Estilo de Vida ModernoThis collection embodies the best attributes of the modern collector and its creator’s diverse interests are mirrored in the breadth of works of art assembled. Despite the variety of content this is not the collection of a magpie, but a polymath, someone with a depth of knowledge who chose each piece with care and focused keenly on its specific attributes. Objects, paintings and furniture from the baroque the contemporary were carefully sought and ultimately acquired for their history, quality and authenticity as well as their clean lines and dramatic effect. The apartment occupies the piano noble of a grand belle époque mansion. Built around the turn of the 20th century it sits comfortably in its own grounds on a grand avenue in one of Spain’s larger cities. The building, stands out with its striking square corner towers, capped with azure-blue tiled domes set in bold contrast with pale cream walls. Well positioned, set high on a promontory, the mansion is bathed in light from morning to night and has breath taking views across open country to distant mountains. Carefully placed against whites and muted greys the collection is the focus and the interior merely the backdrop for the bold lines and colour of the furniture sculpture and paintings assembled. The key to the success of the interiors, and ultimately the collection, is the daring juxtaposition of old and new. The grand roof-lit double-height central hall has been encased in sloping milk-glass panels to create a subtly-lit central lobby from which the rooms of the apartment radiate. This sets the tone not only for the clean modern lines of the rooms beyond, but also for the approach with which the collection has been put together, creating a chic, comfortable home filled with beautiful objects.
