Lot Essay

The model is very similar to, and probably derived from, Tiziano Aspetti’s (1565-1607) figure of Mars, of which a very fine example in bronze is in the Frick Collection, New York (J. Pope-Hennessy and A. Radcliffe, The Frick Collection, Volume III: Sculpture, New York, 1970, pp. 183-185).
