A RECTANGULAR DUAN INK STONE
18TH CENTURY, WITH A DATED INSCRIPTION CORRESPONDING TO 1798
The ink stone is finely carved on top with dense clouds and a beaded edge around the shaped well and grinding surface. The reverse is carved in the recessed center of the base with a lengthy inscription followed by a Jiaqing wuwu cyclical date corresponding to 1798.
7 in. (17.8 cm.) long, wood box
Provenance
The K'ung Hsiang-Hsi (Kong Xiangxi, 1881-1967) Collection, New York, and thence by descent within the family.
Lot Essay
The inscription indicated that the present ink stone had been in the owner’s possession for thirty years and was like a precious old friend to him, and he would not want to lose it.
