A LARGE DEHUA FIGURE OF GUANYIN
19TH CENTURY
The bodhisattva is shown standing with head turned to the side and hands clasped in front. The full robes are draped gracefully around the body and adorned with beaded chains that fall to the hem. The chest is spanned by a ruyi necklace, and the hair is pulled up into a topknot secured by a hairpin behind a lotus crown centered by Amitabha, and is draped with a scarf in back. The glaze has a bluish tone in the folds. A boji yuren (virtue extends to all, even fishermen) mark is incised within a square on the back.

Compare the similarly modeled figure of Guanyin of the same large size and also bearing the mark boji yuren, but shown holding a scroll in the right hand, sold at Christie’s New York, 29 March 2006, lot 502.
