A YELLOW JADE 'ABSTINENCE' PLAQUE
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The pendant is carved and pierced on each side with two stylised confronting dragons. Their bodies are formed by an archaistic scroll that frame a rectangular cartouche at the centre with two characters reading zhai jie, 'abstinence'. The reverse is similarly inscribed in Manchu script. The stone is of an even pale yellow tone.
