Lot Essay

Founded in 1894 by Ulysse Perret, the Swiss watch company Universal was based in Le Locle before being relocated to Geneva. Although the company first started as a manufacture making watch cases, crowns, dials and movements, the manufacture throughout the years evolved into creating high-end timepieces.

With the increased interest in wristwatches during the 1930s, Universal developed chronographs shortly before the start of World War II with the aim of assisting pilots and soldiers during their trainings or combat operations. During the same period, Universal collaborated with the Parisian high-fashion house Hermès in order to create personalized chronographs as well as offer their watches throughout Europe. Leading to an increasing popularity, Universal watches were collected by highly influent political personalities and watch enthusiasts.

Born in 1906, King Faisal Ibn Abdul Aziz Al Saud undertook various important governmental and administrative responsibilities during the reign of his father by representing the country throughout the globe. Through his gathered experience, King Faisal was declared King in 1964 and engaged into developing the country's infrastructure, the economy as well as industrial and agricultural spheres. Emphasizing the role of education, King Faisal developed both general and higher education systems by offering financial assistance to students. With the goal of safeguarding the country's independence and identity, King Faisal Ibn Abdul Aziz Al Saud helped forge modern Saudi Arabia.

With respects to traditions in the Middle Eastern culture, presenting gifts are considered as highly important. The most visible example of this phenomenon is displayed on the present model. Offered here in excellent original overall condition, wristwatches bearing the signature of King Faisal Abdul Aziz Al Saud and the Saudi coat of arms are highly sought after by watch collectors.
