Lot Essay

Untitled from 2008 is exemplary of Josh Smith’s expressive painterly style showing his wide working range. Untitled depicts an abstract field of gestural marks based on his inverted initial J that are then framed on the outside by a red cane-like form that anchors the swirling panoply of blues and greens.
