Lot Essay
This tripod table is in remarkably well-preserved condition, retaining its original japanning to both the top and base. When it entered the museum's collection over 100 years ago it was as if the clock stopped the aging process, and this table, like many other well-preserved pieces in the collection of the Museum, presents more as a table with a hundred and fifty years of wear rather than the actual two hundred and fifty years of its age. A very similar tripod table with scalloped edge and japanned scenes, but with plainer legs and pad feet, was sold Christie's, New York, 12 October 1991, lot 93.
