THE 'HUNDRED BOYS' BOTTLE, DATED SUMMER OF XINSI YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 2001
The first is painted in vibrant colours with boys engaged in various leisurely pursuits, and is inscribed with the title of the scene, date, and with the artists name and a red seal. The agate snuff bottle is carved with two fixed-ring Buddhist lion handles, and is painted to each side with a cowherd and his cow. The bottle is inscribed with the artist's name and one seal.
The larger, 2 ¾ in. (7 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Liu Shouben was an early student of Ye Bengqi and his brother, Ye Xiaofeng, who founded the modern Beijing School in the 1950's. Liu continues to this day as the doyen of the Beijing School after Wang Xisan left for the province of Hebei to set up his own school.
