Julia Shackelford married Freelon Hunter in July 1948 and, later the same year, they travelled to Shanghai, where Freelon took up a posting in the Finance department with General Electric. It was in Shanghai that they developed a fascination with this miniature art form and assembled their collection of snuff bottles in 1948 and early 1949. After subsequent postings to Hong Kong, the Philippines and Venezuela, the couple moved back to the United States in 1951.

A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE 'MELON' SNUFF BOTTLE
18TH-19TH CENTURY
The snuff bottle is carved in the form of a melon growing from a leafy meandering vine, with a small butterfly resting to one side. The stone is of a mottled pale tone with a few minor areas of creamy russet inclusion.
