AN INSIDE-PAINTED AMBER GLASS 'CHANGMEI' SNUFF BOTTLE
WANG XISAN, DATED BY INSCRIPTION TO THE EARLY WINTER OF THE CYCLICAL YEAR OF YISI, CORRESPONDING TO 1965
The snuff bottle is delicately painted to the interior on one side with a scene showing the luohan Changmei seated on a circular straw mat before a tall brazier. An inscription above identifies the figure, with a small oval seal reading yin for 'seal'. The reverse depicts Bodhidharma seated before a pile of books and reading one of the texts. An inscription above identifies the figure and provides the date and signature of the artist. The inscription is preceded by a seal reading zun, 'respect' and is followed by a seal reading Xisan. A large rocky outcrop with bamboo is painted on one narrow side and separates the two scenes. The jadeite stopper is plainly carved.
2 in. (5 cm.) high, stopper
