A PAINTED AND GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY
The figure is seated on top of a recumbent lion and lotus-petal base with the right hand in vitarkamudra and the left holding a pearl. The long robes are adorned with elaborate jewellery and the two-sectioned headdress has a seated Buddha to the centre. The bronze is covered in gilt with areas of coloured pigments. The back of the figure is inscribed with the characters tian qian zao, 'made by Tian', and dong, 'east'.
