4 parts in one volume, 2° (313 x 245mm). Half-title, four section titles, two engraved plates and 53 lithographic plates of which 35 hand-coloured, by G.B. Sowerby (1st; 1788-1854), J. de C. Sowerby, B. Waterhouse Hawkins, W. Wing and A. Adams. (Half-title very lightly stained and strengthened with title at inner margin, occasional light soiling.) 20th-century green morocco by Wigmore, title lettered on spine (lightly soiled).

RARE FIRST EDITION. A fine wide-margined copy of the official scientific report of the surveying voyage led by Sir Edward Belcher amongst the islands of Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and the Philippines between 1843 and 1846. In editing the book, Adams arranged the significant zoological results of this expedition in four sections by various authors, including himself, John Edward Gray (1800-1875), Sir John Richardson (1787-1865), Lovell Reeve (1814-1865) and Adam White (1817-1879).
