Lot Essay

A Sienese artist, Bernardino Fungai was strong influenced by his Umbrian contemporaries, among whom were Pietro Perugino and Bernardino Pinturicchio. This picture is clearly by the same hand as the Madonna from the Perkins collection in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria (Sarti, Dipinti, Sculture e Oggetti dei Secoli XV-XVI, 1985, no. 66); formerly attributed to Bernardino di Mariotto, it is now regarded as a late work by Fungai. The attribution of the present picture to Fungai was widely endorsed by the late Federico Zeri.
