Tom Craig joined Christie’s in 1969. Prior to joining he had worked in the City with C.T. Bowring at Lloyds. He had a deep love of English period furniture, glass and works of art. On many occasions he used to rush from the City during his lunch break to view the sales at Christie’s. He was extremely popular and had a great personality. He was kind, generous and charming and had a splendid sense of humour. He welcomed his many friends to Christie’s and then went to great lengths to look after them. He was a director from 1973 until 1989. During his early years he worked in the Valuations Department. He then became Christie’s first liaison representative in the Middle East. This was not an easy assignment but he made a great success of it. I was at Eton with Tom and he has been one of my greatest friends ever since. I miss him greatly as will his very many friends. His good taste and discerning eye can be seen in the pieces from his collection which are being offered for sale. Anthony Coleridge.
