FREUD, Sigmund (1856-1939). Neue Folge der Vorlesungen zur Einführung in die Psychoanalyse. Vienna: Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, 1933. 8° (194 x 133mm). Half-title. (Very light marginal browning.) Original green cloth, printed dust-wrapper (spine faded and extremities a little rubbed, small piece of head of spine and larger piece of foot of spine of wrapper torn away, lightly sunfaded.) Provenance: SIGMUND FREUD (signature dated 1933 on front endpaper) -- MAX SCHUR (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY FREUD, ASSOCIATION COPY BELONGING TO MAX SCHUR, SIGMUND FREUD’S PHYSICIAN AND FRIEND. Max Schur (1897-1969) became Freud’s physician in 1928 and remained so until the latter’s death in 1939. In the meantime, Schur became a psychoanalyst himself. After Freud’s death he moved to New York, published 16 papers on psychoanalysis and was also president of the American Psychoanalytic Association. In 1972, his wife posthumously published a biography he had written about Sigmund Freud.
Neue Folge der Vorlesungen is a new series of introductory lectures to psychoanalysis; the last one was published 15 years earlier. ‘Freud also hoped the new lectures would bring some much-needed revenue to the Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, which as suffering financially. The new series consisted of seven lectures, incorporating Freud’s latest thoughts on dreams, female sexuality and Weltanschauung’ (Norman). 10,000 copies were printed.
